You should be listening to Spoon!

Spoon is an indie rock band that hails from the great city of Austin, Texas.  Formed and co founded by Brit Daniels and Jim Eno in 1993.  Early musical comparisons to The Pixies and Sonic Youth quickly subsided as they began to define their own sound, a blend of sophisticated, guitar driven pop/post-punk that rocks.

Spoon’s career can be likened to that of a slow boil.  They have seven full length albums and an equal number of EP’s and received critical recognition for their work but have received little radio play along the way.  This might, in part, be related to the label issues that plagued them in the early years.  The irony of this is that there music has found it way on a smattering of television shows that include the following: The Simpsons Veronica Mars, Bones, The O.C., Scrubs, and How I Met Your Mother.  Spoon also appears in the movies 17 Again, Cloverfield, and I Love You Man.

Their music is inventive and ambitious yet accessible. Their albums are consistently tight, usually containing ten or twelve well crafted tracks and clocking in around the forty minute mark.

I saw them awhile back at the House of Blues in Dallas with opening act The New Pornographers…THAT was a great show!!! I create a lot of CD mixes for friends (and for potential girls I want to date:-) and it never fails that Spoon becomes one of their favorite bands!!! Phoenix and Ray LaMontagne are two others that seem to blow friends away. Our work is never done.

I saw them at ACL a while back and they put on a solid show. The mixed tape is a lost art form. You can never go wrong with Ray, he is pure greatness. If you have not checked out Joe Purdy or Alexi Murdoch, they are two pretty solid choices.

I have listened to a bit of Joe Purdy through a friend, but I don’t have anything of his yet, but I am a pretty big fan of Alexi Murdoch. Though he never had any kind of huge major success, I like Neal Casal, who was one of Ryan Adam’s Cardinals. His song, Fierce Little Bird is one of my big faves and is sort of a duet with Shannon McNally. Great stuff!!

Alexi Murdoch is greatness and will be a blog topic this week. You can actually stream Joe Purdy’s stuff from his website. I’m also a huge Ryan Adam fan. I’ll have to check out Neil.
