Greetings music fans,
Today I will highlight the artists from last month and give my selection for their best album and song.
This may seem like a copout blog, and it kind of is. But, with good reason, we became foster parents to three endearing and for the moment, little puppies on Saturday, and they necessitate and deserve more attention than you! Just kidding, you too deserve some attention, but this is as good as it gets today. However, I did pull video for each song selected. That should count for something!
Last month’s featured artists, in no particular order:
Great music waits!

Doyle Bramhall II is a Dallas, Texas born guitarist, singer/songwriter who just happens to be the son of, wait for it…… Doyle Bramhall, friend of the late, great Stevie Ray Vaughan. While in his late teens, Doyle Bramhall II toured as the second guitarist with Jimmie Vaughan and his band The Fabulous Thunderbirds. I thought my high school job was cool and I only I worked at the local video store.
In1992, he and fellow Texan, Charlie Sexton, co-founded the rock band Arc Angels. Doyle and Charlie completed the lineup with the former rhythm section from Stevie Ray Vaughan’s backing band, Double Trouble (Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon). Although they have only recorded one album, the band was well received critically and had several radio hits. Their second album is due sometime in 2010
In 1996, he released his self titled debut solo album which featured Wendy and Lisa who formerly worked with the artist formerly known as Prince. Bramhall wanted to establish himself beyond a guitarist and the album did not do well commercially but by critics gave it some praise. His second album Jellycream was released in 1999. It was met with low sales and led to his label, RCA, to stop funds for his new musical project. Bramhall eventually asked to be let out of his contract.
Shortly thereafter, he caught the ear of Eric Clapton and worked on Clapton’s 2001 album Reptile. It was around this time that Bramhall formed his new band Smokestack which, ironically, opened for Clapton on his 2001 tour and by 2004 he was Clapton’s second guitarist. Bramhall also played guitar with Roger Waters, of Pink Floyd greatness, on his In the Flesh tour.

Top five Doyle Bramhall II Songs:
- Ain’t Goin’ Down Slow (Doyle Bramhall II)
- Marry You (Jellycream)
- Green Light Girl (Welcome)
- So You Want It To Rain (Welcome)
- I’m the One (Jellycream)
What sets the music apart, is the diversity of Bramhall’s talent; songwriting, passionate, soulful vocals, and virtuoso guitar playing. His sound is taut, unyielding and haunting. Clearly influenced by the guitar greats of the past but individualized enough to claim a sound all his own.

Arc Angels are the phenomenal but short lived blues/rock band that formed in Austin, Texas in the early 90’s. The band was a virtual who’s who of the Texas music scene and was comprised of two home grown guitar talents Doyle Bramhall II and Charlie Sexton as well as drummer Chris Layton and bassist Tommy Shannon both of whom played in the late, great Stevie Ray Vaughan’s band Double Trouble. The ARC in the band name is a reference to the Austin Rehearsal Complex where the band members first got together and jammed prior to releasing their self titled debut album.
Due to creative differences, egos, and issues with Bramhall’s substance abuse, the members of the band went their separate ways in late 1993. Both Sexton and Bramhall went on to release several solo albums as well as touring with rock royalty. Bramhall toured with Eric Clapton and Roger Waters while Sexton toured with Bob Dylan. They have also backed artists such as John Mayer, Buddy Guy, and Kenny Wayne Sheppard.
Since 2002, Arc Angels have occasionally reunited for a rare live performance one of which was headlining Austin City Limits Music Festival. In early 2009, members of Arc Angels, except Tommy Shannon, made reunion announcements, prepared a DVD from concert footage taken in 2005, and have begun working on their sophomore album.
The second coming of their new music and live tour will be at Austin’s annual South by Southwest Music Festival in March 2009. Following that, they will open for Eric Clapton on his European tour in May, and then embark on their own U.S. tour this summer.
Key tracks from Arc Angels:

Amos Lee is a Philadelphia born singer/songwriter with a soulfully smooth voice. His self titled debut album was released in 2005 and since then, he has opened for such acts as Bob Dylan, Elvis Costello, B.B. King, Paul Simon, Merle Haggard, John Prine, and an extended tour with Norah Jones. Not a bad start for this relative new comer.
His musical style is primarily acoustic, set to guitar, piano and a bit of percussions. He tends to stick pretty close to the folksy soul style while occasionally bringing a little funk to the mix. For you fans of the “ARC Angles”, Amos Lee’s latest album “Last Day at the Lodge” has Doyle Bramhall II playing guitar.
If you watch much television, you might have heard Lee’s music on“Grey’s Anatomy”, “Studio 60”, “E.R.”, “Army Wives”, “Brothers and Sisters”, and “Six Degrees”.
Lee has a great musical DVD “Amos Lee Live from Austin TX” that has tracks from his first two albums and really showcases his talent.
