Mixed Tape Monday:Home

Well, dear, sweet, gentle reader, I apologize for my absence the last couple of days.  I was on vacation and did not have much time to write.  Before you go getting all jealous, I was not at some exotic locale sipping fruity beverages with crazy names and umbrellas impeding my drinking ability; nor was I finding myself in some serene, remote, mountainous setting.

I was, in fact, at home dealing with the issues of owning a home and in my case, a ninety five year old home.  Yes, the home is indeed older than I.  It is also a lovely home that needed a little repair.  I use the term “little” loosely as I had to replace the upstairs AC and the hot water heater.  And, to be fair, I did not have to do it myself but I did have to avail myself to the schedule of the valiant workers who brought tidings of cool air and hot water.

I’d like to give a gratuitous plug and a big shout out to Aire Serve Heating and Air Conditioning of Fort Worth and Benjamin Franklin Plumbing for their solid work and expertise.

With all of that being said, today’s Mixed Tape Monday theme is Home!

Enjoy and welcome back to the time waste that is my bog!

You should be listening to Arctic Monkeys!

Arctic Monkeys are the little British band that took the music scene by storm in 2006 with the release of their debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not.  The release was the fastest selling debut album in British history (sorry Oasis!).  Not too shabby for a bunch of teenagers who used the miracle of the World Wide Web to get their music to the masses.

Loosely formed in 2001 after some of the members received guitars, the band quickly took shape and began performing locally in Sheffield.  They soon began distributing their material on the internet and built a sizable fan base without any label support.  With the excitement of their British sales, The Arctic Monkeys debut sold around 300,000 copies in the United States which is notable for a debut but still significantly less than their British debut sold in its first week.

In a comedic effort to raise awareness, they released an EP titled Who the F**k Are The Arctic Monkeys and began touring the U.S.  In 2007 the released their second album Favourite Worst Nightmare.  All twelve tracks made the Top 200 on the UK singles chart.  The sound on this album was a stronger and the tempo a bit peppier.

Arctic Monkeys Discography:

  • Whatever People Say I am, That’s What I’m Not
  • Who the F**k Are The Arctic Monkeys (EP)
  • Favourite Worst Nightmare
  • Humbug

Top 5 Arctic Monkey Songs:

  1. I Bet You Look Good On the Dancefloor (Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not)
  2. Crying Lightning (Humbug)
  3. When the Sun Goes Down (Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not)
  4. Brianstorm (Favourite Worst Nightmare)
  5. Cornerstone (Humbug)

On their third album, they inexplicably turned to Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures) to produce Humbug.  The result is decidedly darker from their previous efforts but strangely in line with their unorthodox approach to music.

With the brashness of punk, the heart of rock & roll, and the methodology of indie musicians the Arctic Monkeys are a band driven by their own sound and the journey music provides.
