2010 Music Festivals (a partial list)!

Spring has sprung and the concert season is nigh upon us!  SXSW kicked of the festivals and the summer concert series is just weeks away.  Here is a list of the music fests that will draw a litany of artists and hordes of people.  This list highlights the main( in my humbly superior opinion) music festivals that take place in the continental U.S.  Most festivals are three days long and I’ve highlighted some of the featured (great) artists.

The cool thing about the festivals is that if one takes place geographically close to you, you might catch some really good shows on both sides of the festival dates.

If you have attended any of the above or one not listed, let me know what was great about it and who you saw.

As mentioned in previous blogs I am a ACL acolyte and would strongly recommend that if you have the time and disposable income, you need to check itout.

Great music awaits!

You should be listening to Alexi Murdoch!

Alexi Murdoch is a singer/songwriter who self published his 2003 EP “Four Songs” which ironically, had four songs on it.  “Four Songs” became the number one selling record in the history of indie online music store CD Baby (A great place to find awesome music).  In 2006 he released his debut album “Time Without Consequence”.  In 2009, in a rare display of accessibility, he toured the Unite States.  It certainly appears that Mr. Murdoch is pacing his musical output.

Like other indie artists, Alexi Murdoch’s music has found its way on the silver screen and into the homes of millions due to the miracle of the World Wide Web and television.  You might have heard his songs on Dawson’s Creek, The O.C., House M.D., Prison Break, Ugly Betty, Grey’s Anatomy, Scrubs, Everwood, and Without A Trace.  Not a bad list for a dude with one album.  His song “Orange Sky” was featured in the move Garden State but did not make the soundtrack.

Alexi Murdoch’s delicate songwriting, folk/pop sensibility, and hushed, intimate vocals have endured him to his fans and have the music labels clamoring to sign him.  His reluctance to sign with any label does not appear to be hurting his ability to make a living as a musician.  He has performed at SXSW and the Sundance Film Festival.

You should be listening to Joshua James!

Joshua James is a singer/songwriter who uses his whispery, raspy voice to convey raw emotions that connects you to the music.  I don’t know if it is the distant beauty in his voice or the exposed lyrics that pull you in first.  His songs deal with the emblematic themes of life, love, loss, and they varying emotions that go with it.

His music is built around three central parts; an acoustic guitar, his haunting, expressive vocals, and poignant lyrics.  He paints vivid and at times a deeply chilling, personal picture with his lyrics.  His narrative style offers characters that speak out to you.

Upon returning from some time in South America, James began writing around nineteen and picked up his first guitar when he was twenty.  Now, in his early twenties, his debut “The Sun is Always Brighter” was released in 2006 and he currently has three albums to his credit, performed at both Sundance and SXSW, and has toured with John Mayer, David Gray, and Ani DiFranco.

You should be listening to Fleet Foxes!

Fleet Foxes are a five piece Seattle band that came to light in 2008 with the release of “Sun Giant (EP), which was released on famed Seattle indie label Sub-Pop, and their self titled debut album.  Both releases received critical acclaim.  Despite great reviews in Rolling Stone magazine and other musical press, they were moderately received in the United States but did well in Europe.  With great festival performances in 2008 at SXSW and the Sasquatch Festival, Fleet Foxes gained some national exposure and positive press.  They opened for Wilco shortly after the release of their debut album.

Fleet Foxes combine the retro feel of early pop (The Beach Boys) with the ethereal harmonies of folk.  Their sound is bathed in reverb, multi layered harmonies, and brilliant melodies.  While enjoyable to listen to, it takes a few spins to fully appreciate the dense harmony and the varied acoustic instrumentation that define their sound.  Four part harmony is not uncommon in their songs.

Their youth, Robin Peckold, lead singer is 23, belies their sound, in this age of sampled tracks and autotune, it is rich, textured music with lush harmonies and revealing lyrics.

You should still be listening to Joe Purdy

Here is a little more info on Joe Purdy to assist in your acclimation to his style of music.

Currently, Joe has ten albums to his credit and over 100 songs in his catalog.  Below is a list of his albums:

 Joe Purdy Discography:

  1.  Joe Purdy
  2. Sessions from Motor Ave.
  3. Stomping Grounds
  4. “Julie Blue”
  5. Only Four Seasons
  6. You can tell Georgia
  7. Paris in the Morning
  8. Canyon Joe
  9. Take My Blanket and Go
  10. Last Clock on the Wall

The above mentioned albums are listed in chronological release order.  While I recommend them all, “Julie Blue” was my first Joe Purdy album and still ranks among my favorite.  This collection of songs were written and recorded (in less than a week) while Joe was staying on a river island in upstate New York.  The rough nature of the recording is further enhanced by the sound of the water hitting the docks in the background.  It also contains the song “Wash Away” which has been featured in the TV show “Lost” and is currently being used in a “Dawn Soap” commercial.

Joe recently ended his 2009 tour in Austin on December 20th.  He should begin touring sometime in early 2010.  And, I stand corrected from my previous blog, the Austin date was not his first venture into Texas, he has previously played at Austin’s SXSW in 2007.

In addition to me being a fan, Joe seems to have a growing legion of folks who praise his musical prowess.  Pete Townshend (The Who) is among one of the many.

Check out the amazing duet of “Let My Love Open the Door” with Joe Purdy and the legendary Pete Townshend at the Hotel Cafe.  http://www.ilike.com/artist/Joe+Purdy/videos/352175492

So, continue to take your time and immerse yourself to the greatness of Joe Purdy and let me know what you think.  All songs are available to stream for free from his website www.joepurdy.com .

 Great music awaits!
