You should be listening to The Black Keys!

The Black Keys are the amazing bluesy, rocking dynamic duo of Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney.  They formed in 2001 in Akron, Ohio and have been compared to another bluesy power duo known by the name The White Stripes.

Their debut album, The Big Come Up, was released on 2002 and followed up with Thickfreakness in 2003.  2004 saw the release of Rubber Factory.

Much like other artist of today, The Black Keys music has gained commercial recognition from T.V. shows, commercial advertising, and the silver screen.

The boys have toured with bands such as Pearl Jam, Beck, and Radiohead.  In addition to both critical and commercial success, they have quite a few fans that are in the business.  Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin), Josh Homme (Them Crooked Vultures & Queens of the Stone Age), Thom Yorke (Radiohead), Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), and Kirk Hammett (Metallica) have all gone on record extolling the greatness of The Black Keys.

Top 5 The Black Keys Songs:

  2. Set You Free (Thickfreakness)
  3. Girl Is On My Mind (Rubber Factory)
  4. I Got Mine (Attack & Release)
  5. Strange Times (Attack & Release)

Musically, there is a raw, emotional connectivity that is heavily influenced by the blues.  The amazing thing about the group is how much sound they can produce between the two of them.

You should be listening to Silversun Pickups!

Silversun Pickups is the alt/rock band from California that broke on to the music scene with the release of their sophomore effort “Swoon”.  The bands genesis can be traced to Los Angeles’s premier club scene, most notably Silverlake Lounge.  The Silverlake scene was also home to such artists as Elliott Smith and Rilo Kiley.

In 2005, Silversun Pickups released their EP Pikul which contains twenty-three tracks.  Seventeen of those tracks are untitled and 44 sec. long.  Not sure the reasoning behind this but it is not uncommon for artists to get creative with the CD tracks, spacing, and hidden tracks.

In 2006 they released their full length debut Carnavas that spawned two Top 10 hits “Lazy Eye” and Well Thought Out Twinkles”.  The latter made it on the soundtrack for “Tony Hawks Proving Ground” In 2007 they opened for Foo Fighters a few times during their European tour.

Swoon was their sonically diverse follow up that was released in 2009.  It was a critical and commercial success with their first single “Panic Switch” getting heavy rotation on the radio as well as MTV and VH1.  The success of the album resulted in a five song performance on MTV’s Unplugged as well as some of their songs finding their way in to television shows like The O.C. and The Vampire Diaries.  2009 ended with a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist which elicited some controversy due to the reasonable success of their previous work and their standing in musical realm.

Silversun Pickups Discography

  • Pikul (EP)
  • Carnavas
  • Swoon

Top 5 Silversun Pickups Songs:

  1. Panic Switch (Swoon)
  2. Well Thought Out Twinkles (Carnavas)
  3. There’s No Secrets This Year (Swoon)
  4. Lazy Eye (Carnavas)
  5. The Royal We (Swoon)

The band has a certain, familiar sound that is likened to the grunge sound of the 90’s but with melody and a sense of structure.  Comparisons to The Smashing Pumpkins seem a bit premature given their comparatively small body of work but are reasonable due to their use of overdub and distortion on guitar.

Great Music Awaits

You should be listening to Alexi Murdoch!

Alexi Murdoch is a singer/songwriter who self published his 2003 EP “Four Songs” which ironically, had four songs on it.  “Four Songs” became the number one selling record in the history of indie online music store CD Baby (A great place to find awesome music).  In 2006 he released his debut album “Time Without Consequence”.  In 2009, in a rare display of accessibility, he toured the Unite States.  It certainly appears that Mr. Murdoch is pacing his musical output.

Like other indie artists, Alexi Murdoch’s music has found its way on the silver screen and into the homes of millions due to the miracle of the World Wide Web and television.  You might have heard his songs on Dawson’s Creek, The O.C., House M.D., Prison Break, Ugly Betty, Grey’s Anatomy, Scrubs, Everwood, and Without A Trace.  Not a bad list for a dude with one album.  His song “Orange Sky” was featured in the move Garden State but did not make the soundtrack.

Alexi Murdoch’s delicate songwriting, folk/pop sensibility, and hushed, intimate vocals have endured him to his fans and have the music labels clamoring to sign him.  His reluctance to sign with any label does not appear to be hurting his ability to make a living as a musician.  He has performed at SXSW and the Sundance Film Festival.

You should be listening to Spoon!

Spoon is an indie rock band that hails from the great city of Austin, Texas.  Formed and co founded by Brit Daniels and Jim Eno in 1993.  Early musical comparisons to The Pixies and Sonic Youth quickly subsided as they began to define their own sound, a blend of sophisticated, guitar driven pop/post-punk that rocks.

Spoon’s career can be likened to that of a slow boil.  They have seven full length albums and an equal number of EP’s and received critical recognition for their work but have received little radio play along the way.  This might, in part, be related to the label issues that plagued them in the early years.  The irony of this is that there music has found it way on a smattering of television shows that include the following: The Simpsons Veronica Mars, Bones, The O.C., Scrubs, and How I Met Your Mother.  Spoon also appears in the movies 17 Again, Cloverfield, and I Love You Man.

Their music is inventive and ambitious yet accessible. Their albums are consistently tight, usually containing ten or twelve well crafted tracks and clocking in around the forty minute mark.
